Use of Advanced Computer Techniques in Forest Landscape Planning and Design

Before we think about using computers for landscape planning and design, two questions have to be answered first:
  1. What does 'landscape' mean? (synergy: a landscape is more than the sum of its parts!)
  2. How do we perceive landscape? (individually with our sense organs and our mind - subjective perception!)
  3. How do we assess and plan 'landscape'? (objective planning?)

The perception of landscape

Case 1: percentage of sense activity ---> quantitative approach ---> ?

Case 2: 'landscape feelings' based on personal factors (experience, knowledge, associations, archetypes etc.  ---> qualitative approach ---> ?

Quantitative approach

Qualitative approach

Describe landscape by GIS based  Analyse what you see by GIS based    Using GIS to visualise landscapes   Using Multi Media to reproduce landscape stimuli  Using New Digital Media to give people a share in the  planning process
